Spanish Military 1916 cal. 7,62x51.

On 14 November 1916 Spain decided to adopt a new rifle to replace the M1895 carbine, and, having from some time a license to produce the German M1893 in its Fábrica de Armas de Oviedo, it was easy to start to produce a 21.75-inch (552 mm) barrel rifles based on that design.

The M1916 was manufactured by Oviedo arsenal from 1916 to 1951.

The rifle in our sales listing has a good brite bore with sharp rifling and a good stock and handguard with correct sling swivels.

The main features of the M1916 were:

- a bent bolt handle;

- left rear of the receiver cutted to permit stripper clip loading;

- gas escape holes added to the bolt and to the receiver to vent excess gas in the event of a case failure;

- a full-length wood stock with a straight grip;

- a lug for an M1913 sword bayonet;

- a large sight protecttion added to the front sight;

- side sling swivels;

- a tangent V-notch rear sight graduated from 300 meters to 2,000 m., as usual for the Spanish Civil Guard rifles;

- a stamped "Cal 7.62" on the receiver, close to the gas escape hole drilled through receiver;

- a 44 cm long cleaning rod.

While in 1943 many of the M1916 rifles were converted to fire the 8 mm Mauser cartridge, in the 1950s, many of the M1916 rifles were converted to accept the 7,62 CETME ammunition adopted in 1957, a less powerful but dimensionally identical to 7.62 NATO.

Our rifle was imported in Italy and tested at Gardone Val Trompia Proof House in 2002 (BS mark)
