DWM Model 1908 Uruguayan Contract, cal. 7x57 mm.

The 1908 model is one of the most interesting rifles produced by DWM (Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken of Berlin) for South American Governments.

Made on the base of a full-length Gewehr ’98 rifle but chambered for the 7x57 mm Mauser cartridge, it differs from the Brazilian 1908s only for the different crest on the cartridge chamber and for its greater rarity. In fact, while the DWM supplied 450,000 rifles model 1908 to the Brazilian contract, only 37,000 rifles were produced for Uruguay.

The date of production (1908) engraved under the Uruguayan crest, and the three-digit serial number of the rifle, indicate that the weapon belongs to the very first production batch of 1908.

The main features of the rifle are:

- on the left side wall of the receiver there are the serial numbers, the proof marks and, on two lines, the name of the manufacturer Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken - Berlin.

- on the right side there is engraved Mod. 1908.

- the bolt and the trigger guard have the same serial number as the rifle.

- the original magazine floorplate has two digit numbers inside that do not match those of the weapon.

- the stock has its serial number matching the weapon, and it is made of high-quality European walnut, with a central reinforcement pin, and is equipped with a with a smooth pistol grip. It ends with the classic flat metal buttplate. In the lower part, behind the trigger guard, it shows the circular mark with inside the letter "U". The wood, intact and very well preserved, has a couple of small and superficial dents on the left side below the bolt.

- the inspection mark used by DWM for its export rifles from 1907 to 1911, formed by a "B" letter inscribed in a circle, is on the receiver, near the serial number, on the bolt and on the barrel.

- the rifle has a tangent rear sight, graduated from 300 to 2,000 meters.

- the barrel is 29 1/2 inch (750 mm) round, with an excellent rifling, great to be used in shooting competitions.

- the cleaning rod is correctly 39 cm long (oal is 40).

In the lower part of the barrel are impressed and are clearly visible the Belgian proof marks used from the end of the 1800s to the early 1900s for weapons proved in conformity of German Proof Law of 1891. Among these there is the "B.Blindee (the proof mark designation for jacketed bullets), the diameter of the barrel (7 mm), the mark of the powder used, the barrel proof test, the initial letter of the name of the inspector, etc.

All the original metal surfaces are polished and smooth with all edges sharp, and, unlike most South American rifles, with no corrosion or rust, except for a small and superficial portion of the right side of the receiver, hidden by the stock.
