Mauser Ludwig Loewe Model 1895 Chilean Contract

Here we're offering a pre-war commercial Chilean Mauser Model 1895, exported with Chilean markings added, of the German 1893 mauser rifle.

As history tells, from 1895 to 1900 almost 80,000 Model 1895 rifles and 30,000 Model 1895 carbines were shipped and deployed to the Chilean army and used in a small arms race against Argentina in 1896 and 1898.

The first production, from 1895 to 1896, of those Mauser was manufactured by the Ludwig Loewe company in Berlin, afterward by the DWM.

The main differences with the M.1893 and the M.1895 were the bolt face, that in M1893 was square whereas the Model 1895's was cylindrical, the addition of an auxiliary shoulder behind the bolt handle, in order to provide an extra locking in case of bolt failure, and the magazine follower, that in the M1895 has been rounded to permit the bolt to be closed also when empty.

The rifle is in original and excellent condition, all matching numbers but not the bolt, clean inside and out, fully functioning.

All marking are clear and crisp.

All its parts have Mauser or Chilean inspection marks.

Many parts have the Chilean crossed mine-hammers proof mark.

The Chilean crest is engraved on top of the receiver ring and on the left side of the butt, above "1895", into a rectangular box.

The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number followed by: "MAUSER CHILENO MODELO 1895./MANUFACTURA LOEWE BERLIN." in two lines.

Numbers matching on all its parts, except the bolt assembly.

The cleaning rod is notpresent.

The muzzle end is clean and without scuffs on its surface.

Historical references

Origin:

Many of the 1895 Chilean contract rifles were made by stamping the Chilean Crest on the 1893 Mausers made for the ZAR (Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek) that remained undelivered because of the English blocus raised during the 2nd Boer Wars.

Rarity:

To discourage theft and desertion in non-activity times outside military barracks, the bolts were removed from rifles and every soldier went to sleep taking his bolt under the pillow and rifles remained in safe storages without bolts, guarded by armed sentries.
For this reason it's unusual to find still matching bolts and rifles, and might be a good idea to own a never issued or not much used Chilean mauser.
