Mauser Model 1935 Brazilian Contract 

This is a very interesting and rare Mauser Oberndorf Brazilian contract rifle belonging to the 7,000 long rifles that were made for the Brazil Export Contract between 1935-37.

The first production batch, consisting of 3,000 long rifles and 1,000 carbines, was completed and delivered during September 1935, while a second batch of 4,000 long rifles was delivered to Brazil form March 1936 to May 1937.

As the time frames stipulated by the contracts with Brazil were pretty narrow and Germany was already on a wartime footing, the Mauser authorities decided to produce, test, pack and ship those rifles as fast was possible, collecting and reworking  “Imperial German” Gewehr98 from 1918, in any condition and in very small numbers survived to the destruction that come between 1918-1924 or to the export to Turkey and other countries.

When these Brazilian M1935 rifles were surplussed in the 1970s, some where sold to Canada, while 5,000 long rifles and carbine were bought in 1976 by the German Frankonia Waffen of Würzburg who imported them to Germany. A part of this batch arrived in the original, unopened and sealed, zinc crates, never issued or only issued for parades before, and another batch of rifles arrived in open metal boxes, mostly lacking accessoires at all or no longer with matching numbers.

With this premise, let's talk about our rifle and its interesting features, and of the reasons that make it really interesting to the surplus weapon enthusiasts, especially if dedicated to sport shooting competitions.

Like its predecessor Model 1908, this Model 1935 Brazil contract rifle is a full-length Gewehr ’98 type, chambered for the 7mm Mauser cartridge, with a tangent rear sight graduated from 100 to 2,000 meters.

The main features of the rifle are:

- the Brazilian Crest on top of the receiver ring and the Mod.1935 mark on its right side are perfectly clear and blued;

- the Mauser banner is rollmarked onto the rear action bridge and the receiver is richly blued;

- the bolt is matching number and in optimal condition; 

- the rifle stock is made with a high quality European walnut, with long grasping grooves milled into both side of the forend, and is equipped with a smooth pistol grip, and it ends with a flat metal buttplate. The wood is not scratched or bruised;

- serial numbers match on all the rifle parts.

The barrel is 29 1/2 inch (750 mm) round, with a very good rifling, great for use in shooting competitions.

The acceptance marks have the commercial / export contract crowns over the letters B (Beschuss = proof load fired), U (Untersuchung = inspected/viewed for defects, proof approved), G (Geschoss = for solid bullet, on rifled barrels) and N (for 'semi-smokless' proof).

The cleaning rod is correctly 39 cm long (oal is 40) and not blued.

All original metal surfaces are smooth with all edges sharp; clear lettering, numerals and Mauser banner on metal.
